A History of Mrs Mac's

Late 1940s

Birth of the Business

The business began as a small retail family enterprise manufacturing cakes, yeast buns and pies in Melbourne.

1954

Move to Perth, Western Australia

Several years later the owner, Ken Macgregor, moved with his family to Perth, Western Australia where new business opportunities awaited. There a small wholesale pie and cake business was established with the trade name 'Bakewell Pies'.

1968

Purchase of Morley Site

With the company's steady growth it was realised that new facilities would soon have to be built, and a new site in Morley was secured. Close to the city, transport and employees, the Morley site was a necessity, and instrumental in allowing the business to develop further.

New Directions

Being a family business it wasn't long before the next generation had an opportunity to make their own improvements to the company. In the business for over 20 years Iain Macgregor, son of the founder, recognised a real opportunity. The Australian Pie Market was stagnant and well overdue for some stimulation, with many other food groups challenging for market share.

1983

New Technology

When Iain took over the business a new direction was set in product innovation, standards and production technology. The company was responsible for pioneering the glass front pie warmer in Australia allowing for great in-store display and helping to drive sales.

1986

Expansion

The business shipped its first products outside WA into the Northern Territory and beyond.

1988

Mrs Mac's

Work began to develop a range of products which would lift the bar and set new standards for meat pies, pasties and sausage rolls in Australia. The design brief demanded no compromise on quality, with a move back to traditional ingredients and processes. After many months of recipe development and taste testing the Mrs Mac's product range was born.

1990

New Frontiers

The successful expansion into Victoria and Queensland was led by the Mrs Mac's Traditional Beef Pie. This resulted in considerable volume growth for the business. This in turn required an upgrade of the factory with new manufacturing and packaging equipment.

Improvements

Mrs Mac's made further improvements to the pie warmer with a new display unit that had an angled glass front and feature lighting to enhance product display.

1993

Innovation

In order to keep meeting the demand for new and interesting products, Mrs Mac's introduced the first commercial ‘layered' pie to the market. Filled with a layer of minced beef and diced bacon in a tasty gravy and topped with a generous serve of creamy cheese, the Beef, Cheese & Bacon pie has been a resounding success from the day it was launched.

Growth Into More New Markets

Further expansion into Tasmania and South Australia.

1997

Healthier Choice

Mrs Mac's has been working with school canteens and health professionals over many years to develop a range of nutritionally modified products for consumers with concerns for their fat and sodium intake. Initial products were branded Munja, which sold widely in schools throughout Western Australia.

1998
